Detective Ross Tanner is affected by a rare syndrome that causes temporary blindness and hallucinations. At first disoriented, he begins to interpret his visions as clues from his unconscious mind, and uses them to solve cases - to the bafflement of his team, who had valued his former cold analytical approach. But investigating orchestrated race violence, Tanner comes up against the malevolent and manipulative Harold King, a retired gangster, who is also blind. Just as Tanner has harnessed his blindness to uncover the truth, King uses his to realise his bitterness and hate.
